NoSCA Select win the SCU Trophy
This was a great match to watch. Utterly thrilling in how the fortunes of the match swung from either team up to what was the final delivery.
Jim Young, Cricket Scotland President, stated in his award presentation speech that this final had been a great advert for cricket and that it had been a superb spectacle.
NoSCA batted first and looked in trouble at 33 for 3. A superb stand of about 60 between a couple of left-handers Stevie & Milind steadied the ship and gave NoSCA a platform to build again. Wickets tumbled as the swish factor appeared at the end of the innings amid some tight bowling by East Kilbride, however, the last pair racked up what proved to be some vital runs at the death. U.Saeed took 5-47 in his bowling spell.
At tea, the NoSCA total of 165 looked about 25 runs light of a decent score, but 165 was a defendable total.
East Kilbride got off to a bit of a flyer and were putting runs on the board. Kampman was beginning to take a fancy to the bowling. Dave Wolton came on to bowl and produced a spell of 4-23 that ripped the heart out of the main East Kilbride batting line-up. His caught & bowled wicket of the East Kilbride captain, Alistair Dalgleish, was simply stunning. It was a rasper. Dave bowled a half-volley that was flat-batted back at head height. The ball had been smote with a fair bit of power. Dave, still in his follow through, seemed to stick his left hand out behind himself and catch the passing exocet. The crowd was all looking for the ball bouncing off the sightscreen, unaware that Dave had caught it.
That wicket was the turning moment of the game. A few more wickets fell, however, the 9th wicket partnership of Tommy Richards (33) and young Gareth (20 odd) brought East Kilbride back into the hunt. The two youngsters for East Kilbride batted with a maturity that seemed to be missing from their team's middle order. It was just unfortunate that such a valiant effort was in vain.
The final wicket fell at 158 and the NoSCA Select had achieved a competition victory that their league must be immensely proud of.
At the awards presentation, Alistair Dalgleish, the East Kilbride captain, was gracious in defeat in his praise and conveying of congratulations to NoSCA. I was impressed how a relatively young chap composed himself when having to endure bitter disappointment. Dave Walton, likewise was courteous to all concerned. It was nice to see genuine sportsmanship and that the spirit of cricket was apparent all day.
Milind was awarded the Man of the Match Award and seemed to be very honoured at the decision.
All in all, as a neutral watching, it was a great game of cricket, played in a fantastic manner and with an honesty that seems to be missing elsewhere and it was unfortunate that there had to be a loser. However, NoSCA prevailed and the clubs in the league should be proud of the achievement that their players have done for their league.
Well done East Kilbride and congratulations to the NoSCA select. - Siggy
